Revie goes Lure Coursing

Recently, our sweet merle girl Revie (who lives in a guardian home) got a chance to try lure coursing! She had a blast and we can’t wait to give it a shot with our crew!

Lure coursing (called ‘coursing’ as a sport- ‘luring’ is an entirely different activity 🙂 is an activity that simulates the chase of sighthounds after speedy prey (traditionally rabbits in western Europe; sighthounds in the middle east were and still are used to take prey as varied as mountain goats, gazelles, and a variety of other small, very speedy animals.)  The lure is a plastic bag (or occasionally a fur-covered squawker which makes noise as it bumps along the ground) on a string that pulls it just a little bit faster than the dog can run. (It’s operated by a human who can ‘bump’ the speed in order to keep the lure ahead of the dogs; killing the lure isn’t the point of the game, just chasing it, although dogs do generally grab it at the end when it stops.) The course may be straight (straight racing or drag racing) or have twists and turns that use pulleys affixed to the ground to make the line turn sharply.  It’s really fun and most dogs with even a bit of playdrive love the game. 🙂
